Windham County wildlife control Tip of the Month:

Do mothballs or ammonia help repel groundhogs?
Groundhogs are also known as woodchuck belongs to a large group of ground squirrels. It is a lowland creature and is found in much through of the eastern United States across Canada and into Alaska as well. Adult groundhogs are usually 16 to 20 inches long with 6 inches of tail. They are usually brown and grey blackish and have a squirrel-shaped body. It has completely black eyes and ears are short.

What do they eat?
Groundhogs feed on shrubs, herbs, sometimes small insects and ants. They usually eat vegetables and seasonal crops, and there is a chance that your field becomes vulnerable groundhogs find their hide-in there. They also eat grubs, grasshoppers, insects and other small animals but they are not omnivorous at all.

How to get rid of them?
You may want to get rid of groundhogs from your yard, and you might be thinking of using mothballs or ammonia to use as a remedy to get rid of them, but it won't work at all. This remedy of using ammonia and mothballs do not work on groundhogs, and instead, you need to resort to some other strategy to remove them from your yard. To adopt an effective strategy to remove groundhogs, then you can adopt one of the following strategies.

Use of red pepper, black pepper or any other spices
Spread red pepper, black pepper or any other spices mixture near their burrows to keep them away from your house. However, if the area to be cleared is large enough then you can mix these spices in water and spray them all over to ensure the large area has been covered effectively.  Use of garlic You can also use garlic to keep them away from your house, but it is a tiring process.  Use large dog as a predator to scare groundhog You may use your pet dog to scare the groundhogs away from your house.  Use of eggs and castor oil You may use eggs, crack the eggs and spread it all over the burrow and cover with dirt. It may help in keeping groundhogs away.

What problems do groundhogs cause?
Also one of the most common reasons to get rid of them is that they dig burrows and these burrows may help other reptiles to find their abodes. This will let other reptiles find their way into your house and thus putting troubles for you. These burrows can damage the roots of plants and make it difficult for people and animals to walk through the yard without slipping in a burrow when it's near the surface. They cause damages to trees by stripping them of their bark to indicate their burrow's entrance; which makes the trees more susceptible to diseases.
